Tonight I decided to plant some more artichokes. This is a different variety than the other artichokes that I have planted previously.
I decided to use a perlite/peat mix to start the seeds in. I also auto-claved the soil. I seem to have less problems with damping off and pest issues when I do this.

I am going to grow them in my parking strip in front of my house. Artichokes usally last about 3 years in Utah. If you expose them to cold before you transplant them then they will produce artichokes the first year. Otherwise you have to wait for them to overwinter before they produce.

Yesterday I visited my in-laws in Spring City. On the way I saw several red tailed hawks, two bald eagles and some deer and elk. I also saw a hawk that I did not recognize that had a red head. It was about the size of a red tailed hawk. Here is a picture of the elk.

A couple of days ago I came across this huge herd of antelope over by Eagle Mountain.
I wonder why you always see dead deer on the side of the road but hardly ever see dead antelope or elk? Could it be that antelope and elk are smarter? How long would it take natural selection to breed out all the dumb deer that get hit by cars?

Uncle Bingo Herds Whitefish Last Monday Uncle Bingo and I decide to fly fish for whitefish on the Weber River. We arrived at our first hole at around 11:00. The hole was in the shade. We managed to catch a few whitefish even though we had to clear the ice out of our guides and off of our lines about every forth cast. We also managed not to have to touch any of the whitefish. I made some raspberry vinegar last week. What I did was to purchase some Patricia Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar that is not pasteurized and has an active mother in it. I then mixed it with an equal part of raspberry juice. The more oxygen that is introduced to the mixture the quicker the vinegar forms. I accomplished this by putting it on my magnetic stir plate. On my trellis I have the strings tied to a wire that goes across the top. Unfortunately the wire was not strong enough to hold up the weight of the tomatoes.

Last night I made some yogurt. I took a gallon of milk and heated it up to about 175 F. I let it cool to 120 f. I stirred in a small container of Yogplait vanilla yogurt. The yogurt has the active culture. I placed it in my oven over the pilot light. When I woke up in the morning I had a gallon of yogurt.

I decided to try my hand at pumpkin carving. Here are the results.
I tried to use a pumpkin carving knife that I bought at the grocery store. It bent in half within a minute of its use. I ended up using a small paring knife and a x-acto knife to carve the pumpkin. It took me about an hour to carve.

I found that I was out of bullets. Unfortunately I was also out lead to cast new ones. I started out by calling a few gun shops in Salt Lake that carry supplies for casting bullets. Alas none of them had any pure lead. Pure lead must be used for muzzleloaders, otherwise the bullet is too hard to go down the barrel of the gun.
